Liverpool’s 19-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni has named former Reds player Thiago Alcantara as his inspiration, ahead of a potential first Premier League start this weekend. Nyoni’s comments follow his impressive performance in his first Champions League start on Wednesday, a 6-3 victory against LASK, where he excelled.
Thiago’s Influence on Nyoni’s Game
Nyoni, who made his Liverpool debut in February 2024 and has since featured 26 times for the first team, openly attributes his composed playing style to watching Thiago. He stated, “For me, I always watch players like Thiago. For me, Thiago, yeah, he is the guy!” as reported by Liverpool FC. The young midfielder believes he possesses a “stone-cold calmness” on the pitch.
Manager Andoni Iraola has also expressed confidence in Nyoni, describing him as “mature” and “tactically very smart,” according to the BBC. Iraola has given Nyoni significant trust and responsibility, instructing him to get on the ball, play forward, and press high. Nyoni noted that the manager has been instrumental in helping him adapt to a new position, making his life “easy” since his arrival.
Potential Premier League Debut and Self-Belief
With Ryan Gravenberch suspended and Dominik Szoboszlai a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Brentford, Nyoni is a strong candidate to make his first Premier League start. Despite the high stakes, the 19-year-old insists he feels no nerves. “I don’t feel nervous at all. I don’t get nervous. With all the hard work I have put in to get to this moment and position, I just want to show the manager and everyone what I can do and show the fans what I can do,” he said, as per the BBC.
Nyoni joined Liverpool in September 2023 from Leicester City’s academy and views nights like his recent European start as a dream come true. He is determined to continue improving and progress in his career.
What This Means for Manchester and Greater Manchester Readers
For football fans in Manchester and Greater Manchester, Nyoni’s emergence represents the continued development of young talent in the Premier League. As a potential opponent for Manchester clubs in future fixtures, his rise from academy football to the first team showcases the competitive landscape of top-tier English football. His potential debut against Brentford will be keenly watched across the country as a testament to youth progression in the sport.
