New RuneScape Title ‘RS4’ in Early Development
Jagex has confirmed that a fourth full-fledged RuneScape title, currently codenamed ‘RS4′, is in early development. The new Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) is being built using Unreal Engine, aiming to blend the series’ established community-driven spirit with modern technology.
The game was revealed at RuneFest in Birmingham, England, where Jagex offered a glimpse of the new project. While details are scarce, the developers stated that ‘RS4’ will ‘bring the world of Gielinor to life in Unreal Engine’. A release is not anticipated for at least a few years.
This new title joins RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and the survival-crafting spinoff Dragonwilds, forming what Jagex describes as a popular trio. Details about the new project were kept under wraps, but a trailer was shown to attendees at the keynote.
The announcement comes as Old School RuneScape players have a raft of new content announced. Menaphos, a city that has been inaccessible in OSRS since its addition in 2005, will finally be playable through a new quest in the Kharidian questline. This will grant access to the Imperial District, featuring the game’s first Skilling Dungeon and an additional Cactus Patch. RuneScape 3 added Menaphos in 2017.
Further Old School RuneScape updates include details on Raids IV, titled ‘The Fractured Archive’, which is set to be the hardest Raid to date. The next Goblin quest, ‘The Chosen Commander’, will conclude Zanik’s story, and the Fairy questline will receive a conclusion with ‘Fairy Tale III – Nexus of Power’. This questline has been on a cliffhanger in OSRS since 2013.
November will also introduce ‘Quest Month’, featuring a collection of smaller quests added weekly. The ‘Dungeons of Gielinor’ update will bring new bosses, ranging from beginner-friendly to those for veterans, with hard modes planned for the simpler encounters. A significant rework for Mining and Smithing has also been confirmed, aiming to better link crafting to player progression. Hardcore Worlds, launching on November 4th, will offer a one-life per player experience with a separate economy, where progress can transfer to the main game upon death.
