Spain Squad Decision: Why Pedri Benched for England Match

Spain midfielder Pedri will start on the bench for the UEFA Nations League fixture against England at Wembley. The decision comes from manager Luis de la Fuente and is purely technical, despite the Barcelona player’s strong start to the season with his club.

De la Fuente’s Midfield Selection

For the highly anticipated match against England, De la Fuente has opted for a midfield trio of Rodri, Fabián Ruiz, and Dani Olmo. According to 365Scores, these three players are currently ahead of the Canary Islander in De la Fuente’s starting structure. The manager’s choice prioritises the balance he believes this combination offers for the start of the Wembley encounter.

While the 23-year-old midfielder’s importance to Barcelona is clear, his initial role within the national team under De la Fuente continues to be as an important alternative rather than a guaranteed starter. His presence on the bench is not due to any injury or physical issue, as confirmed by Sports Illustrated.

Pedri’s Evolving Role in the National Team

This situation mirrors events during the recent World Cup, where Pedri started the group stage matches, Round of 32, and Round of 16, but transitioned to a substitute role from the quarter-finals onwards. He entered the field in the second half during those later stages, and his introductions from the bench allowed for different characteristics in the midfield.

De la Fuente recently addressed the perceived incompatibility between Pedri and Rodri, stating his belief that they can indeed play together. Speaking on ‘El Larguero’ of Cadena SER, and reported by El Nacional.cat, De la Fuente highlighted that the young midfielder has adapted his style of play. He commented, “Rodrigo makes you play differently, Pedri has to provide other things and he does because he is very good. Having Rodrigo in the team is always good news because he is the best in the world in his position.” The manager added that the strong partnership the two midfielders have demonstrated this summer at Barcelona further proves their ability to link up effectively. Consequently, they are expected to be key players for the Spanish national team going forward.

Outlook for the Nations League

Despite starting the UEFA Nations League opener as a substitute, the Barcelona midfielder is expected to play a crucial role as a variant for Spain during matches, particularly when the team needs to increase ball control or find greater clarity in circulation. Spain faces a demanding schedule with four fixtures during this international window, meaning the manager will need to rotate his squad and manage player loads. This will provide the young midfielder with opportunities to try and regain a starting spot in upcoming matches.
