Teenage forward JJ Gabriel is widely expected to leave Manchester United, despite his recent inclusion in the club’s official team photo for the current season. Sources close to the club indicate that while Gabriel remains registered with United, a reconciliation with the player appears unlikely, with no significant progress made in attempts to resolve the situation.
Rift with the Club Deepens
The official team photographs, released on Monday, were reportedly taken on 8 September, just two days before Gabriel played his final game for the club and informed them of his intention to depart. Sky Sports News understands that Gabriel and his family submitted a formal request to leave shortly after the photo shoot. Multiple attempts by Manchester United to reconcile the situation, citing their duty of care to the young player, have so far been unsuccessful.
Gabriel, who turns 16 on Tuesday, has attracted significant interest from several of Europe’s top clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich. While no clubs have formally approached United regarding Gabriel, the club has indicated it would consider legal action if evidence of an illegal inducement by another club or agent emerges, which would contravene regulations concerning young players. This comes as Barcelona has previously denied interest in Gabriel.
According to BBC Sport, the player’s decision to seek a move away was ultimately triggered by his non-inclusion in Michael Carrick’s squad for the Champions League encounter against Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK on 10 September. Gabriel’s camp had expressed a desire for him to be used as a substitute in this game, or potentially against Brighton in the EFL Cup on 16 September, to become United’s youngest ever player. However, Gabriel was ineligible for the Sabah Champions League match as he had not been registered on United’s UEFA A list of players when it was announced on 3 September. He instead scored a hat-trick in a UEFA Youth League game against Sabah on the same day.
Competing Perspectives: United’s Commitment vs. Gabriel’s Ambition
Manchester United believes it has clearly demonstrated Gabriel’s importance to their first-team future. The club points to lobbying the Premier League to allow him to use ‘JJ Gabriel’ on his shirt (his real name is Joseph Junior Andreou O’Cearuill, which he reportedly changed for commercial purposes), providing first-team care and services including senior coach and nutritionist meetings, and his inclusion in the senior team photo as evidence of their commitment to his development.
However, Gabriel and his family hold a different view. Sky Sports News reports that his camp desired more than the eight to nine minutes of play he received in his sole senior pre-season friendly appearance against Atletico Madrid on 1 August. They also reportedly requested Gabriel feature for at least 20 minutes in specific matches – against Sabah in the Champions League, Brighton in the Carabao Cup, and Bournemouth in the Premier League – before engaging in scholarship contract negotiations. Furthermore, Gabriel did not report for the start of the academy’s pre-season training schedule in early July, a week before the senior squad, as his family reportedly believed it was ‘beneath him’ and he should only train with the first team.
Club sources believe the tension primarily stems from Gabriel’s family wanting to chase historical records, while United prioritises his long-term development. Interim boss Darren Fletcher, when Gabriel was 14, had previously stated the youngster was not physically ready for a competitive senior debut, despite his exceptional performance at under-18 level, where he was named the Premier League’s Under-18 player of the year in the 2025-26 campaign.
What This Means for Manchester United
The ongoing saga surrounding JJ Gabriel highlights the challenges major clubs face in retaining highly-rated youth prospects amidst intense competition and the aspirations of young players and their families. For Manchester United, the potential loss of a player once seen as immensely important to their future development raises questions regarding their youth pathway and talent retention strategies. Other recent transfer activity, such as the finalisation of Isaac Konde’s transfer, demonstrates the club’s ongoing work in this area, while the situation could also impact perceptions of roles like Jason Wilcox’s at Manchester United.
Michael Carrick has urged caution regarding the situation, telling Sky Sports that the club has a duty of care to the 15-year-old. “We have to be a little bit careful on that one,” Carrick stated. “He’s a 15-year-old boy. It’s more about the welfare, the care and the attention of JJ as a child, really.” While Gabriel remains a Manchester United player for now, the club acknowledges it is unlikely he will wear the United shirt again, with Europe’s biggest clubs continuing to circle.
