Grand Seiko has announced the release of the Elegance SBGW325, a new limited edition timepiece designed to honour the brand’s inaugural manual-winding 9S model, the SBGW003, first introduced in 2001. This tribute model, limited to 600 pieces, will be available from October 2026 at Grand Seiko Boutiques, priced at €5,700 or $5,800.
Design and Features of the Grand Seiko SBGW325
The Grand Seiko SBGW325 reintroduces the distinctive dial layout of the original SBGW003, featuring boldly raised Arabic numerals. While the numerals on the new model are silver-toned, contrasting with the gold-coloured ones of its predecessor, the dial itself is a deep navy, inspired by Japan’s traditional indigo-dyeing techniques, according to Fratello Watches. The watch features Dauphine hands, with a touch of gold on the seconds hand and the applied GS logo.
The timepiece maintains the same polished stainless steel case proportions as the SBGW301 and SBGW305 models, with a diameter of 37.3mm, a lug-to-lug measurement of 44.3mm, and a thickness of 11.7mm. Its dial is protected by a box-shaped sapphire crystal. The caseback, secured by six screws, offers a view of the movement.
Internally, the SBGW325 is powered by the manual-winding Calibre 9S64, a direct descendant of the 9S54 movement found in the original SBGW003. This modern movement boasts an upgraded power reserve of 72 hours (three days) and an accuracy rating of +5 to -3 seconds per day, as detailed by Monochrome Watches. The watch is delivered with two quick-release leather straps: a hand-dyed blue crocodile strap and a more casual light grey cow leather strap. Its water resistance is rated as “splash-resistant”.
Legacy of the SBGW003
The original SBGW003 holds historical significance for Grand Seiko as the first manual-winding 9S model, equipped with the Calibre 9S54 – the brand’s first hand-wound in-house movement since its modern return. This movement laid the foundation for subsequent calibres, including the 9S64. Design-wise, the SBGW003 itself was a homage to Grand Seiko’s 1960s collection, playing a role in re-establishing the brand’s identity for a global audience with its subtle and elegant aesthetic. The case design and proportions of the SBGW003 continue to influence current models like the SBGW301 and SBGW305.
