The Washington Commanders are set to face the San Francisco 49ers on Monday 19 October, in what will be a significant challenge for the Washington side. For UK viewers, the game will be broadcast on Sky Sports NFL and Sky Sports Main Event, with streaming options available via NOW or NFL Game Pass on DAZN, according to The Guardian.
Commanders Face Uphill Battle with Key Injury
The Commanders enter the game with a 1-3-1 record, holding the second-worst point differential in the NFC at minus-34. Their recent form includes frittering away a game-winning field goal opportunity in overtime against the Giants last week. A significant challenge for Washington will be the absence of second-year tailback Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who is out with a groin injury. Croskey-Merritt has been a key part of the Commanders’ robust running game, which ranked fifth in the league in yardage with 698 yards before this week.
With Croskey-Merritt sidelined, the running load is expected to shift to quarterback Jayden Daniels and a veteran running back duo comprising Austin Ekeler and Rachaad White. One tactical aspect to watch will be how the Commanders approach the 49ers’ offence, with Niners Nation reporting that quarterback Brock Purdy and the 49ers can anticipate plenty of blitzing from the Washington defence.
49ers Enjoy Strong Start as Key Defender Returns
In contrast, the San Francisco 49ers have enjoyed a stellar start to their season, boasting a 5-0 record. This strong performance has given them a considerable advantage in the NFC West, a division that was initially expected to be highly competitive. The 49ers have already secured crucial head-to-head tiebreakers, including two victories against the defending champion Seahawks and MVP Matthew Stafford’s Rams.
Adding to their strength, star edge rusher Nick Bosa is expected to return to action from a late-September calf strain for this game. His return will further bolster a defence that managed five sacks against Sam Darnold without him. Quarterback Brock Purdy is currently playing some of the best football of his career, supported by an experienced offensive unit including Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Mike Evans, and Trent Williams. While the 49ers’ defence has been described as more average than terrific recently, it is anticipated to improve as it becomes healthier, especially with Bosa’s re-entry.
