Marvel Studios has re-released its blockbuster film, Avengers: Endgame, in cinemas as “Avengers: Endgame Encore”, featuring four brand new scenes designed to directly bridge the story to the upcoming film, “Avengers: Doomsday”. This extended version, which includes an additional four minutes of footage, is performing strongly at the box office, with projections suggesting a significant weekend gross.
New Scenes Expand the ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Narrative
The “Avengers: Endgame Encore” re-release introduces four new scenes, integrating characters such as Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner. These additions were filmed during the production of “Avengers: Doomsday” and serve to connect the two major Avengers narratives, according to Variety.
- Loki’s Visit to Steve and Peggy: One scene unfolds during Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s dance at the close of Endgame. Loki, in his Time Variance Authority uniform, makes a surprising visit, potentially to address the unstable branch in the multiverse created by Steve’s time travel. This follows Loki’s last appearance holding up the multiverse in the finale of “Loki” Season 2.
- Multiverse Collapse at the TVA: Another scene takes place at the Time Variance Authority, with Mobius, Casey, Ouroboros, and Miss Minutes observing two Earths on the verge of collision. More alternate worlds begin to collide, revealing that the entire multiverse is collapsing. This is speculated to set up the clash between the X-Men universe (featuring characters like Professor Xavier and Magneto, previously teased for “Doomsday”) and the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Bruce Banner’s Encounter with Doctor Doom: A new credits scene features Bruce Banner after his apprehension in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, where he lost control and transformed into the Hulk under Jean Grey’s mind control. Bruce is seen in an underground bunker working on a serum to suppress his transformations when Doctor Doom breaks in, leading to Bruce transforming into the Hulk to face him.
- Doctor Doom’s Origin Hint: The final new scene, appearing at the very end of the credits, reveals flashes of Doctor Doom creating his metal mask, accompanied by the same metal-clanging sound heard in the original Endgame, which was previously associated with Iron Man forging his armour. This suggests a mirrored origin between Doom and Iron Man, both played by Robert Downey Jr.
Box Office Performance of the ‘Endgame Encore’ Release
The re-release is proving to be a strong draw for audiences. Deadline reports that “Avengers Endgame: Encore” is estimated to gross approximately $11 million on Friday alone, with a projected three-day weekend total between $23 million and $26 million across 3,060 theatres. Its previews brought in $3.8 million, surpassing the $3.4 million achieved by the re-release of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” last year.
This performance contributes to what is being described as a “fantastic late-September frame at the box office,” with projections suggesting four films could each clear $20 million over the weekend. While its lifetime cumulative gross could reach $884.3 million, it is not expected to overtake “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” as the all-time domestic leader from Marvel Studios, which is anticipated to reach around $950 million by Sunday.
Looking Ahead to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
The new scenes in “Avengers: Endgame Encore” are part of a broader strategy by Marvel and Disney to build anticipation for “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is set to release on December 18. Previous teasers for “Doomsday” had been attached to “Avatar: Fire and Ash” a year prior, revealing elements such as Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter having a son, Thor and his adopted daughter, and the crossing of characters from Fox’s “X-Men” universe into the MCU.
The release of “Avengers: Doomsday” on December 18 will coincide with “Dune: Part 3,” setting up a significant box office showdown.
